Pulled In: At the very end of Crisis Core, moments before his death. Instead of being brought to the Lifestream with Angeal, he is taken to the trains.
Cut Down: He has no Materia or potions to heal himself, so having nearly been shot to death he is currently gravely wounded. Zack’s Mako enhancements – healing, speed, strength, vision – are all severely cut down, partially due to his injuries. He’s also unarmed, having left his treasured Buster Sword with a dear friend to finish his story.
Frequently in the past, coming from both his mentor and his comrades, Zack has been often referred to as “Zack the Puppy”, and it shows greatly in his personality. At least, that’s how Zack was before. He used to be an enthusiastic, energetic, carefree individual who was always eager to get the job done and have fun while doing it. It’s what made him a strong candidate for ShinRa’s elite military sect by the name of SOLDIER.
But following the tragic events of his first few months as a First Class, a considerable change is noticed in Zack’s behaviour and personality. While he still retains the cheerful and friendly attitude that wins over the ladies and not to mention the boys too (at a later point in time, a group of ladies in Midgar form The Zack Fair Fanclub), he’s adapted several traits of his fallen mentor who continues to watch over him – even letting his hair grow longer as a symbol of respect.
Wise wouldn’t quite be the word to describe him, as he’s most certainly not – Zack is known to be clumsy, saying things without thinking, and brashly running into dangerous situations that sometimes he just can’t handle, but he’s matured considerably in his journey. Zack has strong morals, questioning who he fights for and why, if the path he’s chosen in life was really the right one for him. He always has that spark of hope, that things can turn around, that he’s strong enough to do what he believes is right, but there are often times when he reverts back to his lost puppy state and calls out to the heavens for advice from his mentor when things just go from bad to worse.
Aside from that, Zack is a complete flirt. When it comes to relationships, whether he’s merely interested in someone or something has already been established, he thinks nothing of spoiling them and showering them with compliments and affection – but they better be ready for some teasing. Very much the touchy-feely type, if he likes someone – even just as a friend – don’t be surprised if he bounces up and tackles them from behind. If he’s scared – while rare, sometimes there are the rather frightening-looking dust bunnies that resemble something more fiendish – rest assured he will be hiding behind someone within an instant before claiming that he really wasn’t scared at all. Going back to his fitting Puppy nickname, he loves being held, pet, and especially scratched behind his ears. If he likes you enough, he’ll roll over for a cookie.
Zack is known to rush to the aid of anyone who appears to be in distress. But Zack’s kind heart can also be his downfall; he will stop at nothing to protect the ones he loves, even if it means risking his life. He stands for what he believes is right, even if it means he has to fight against those he cares most about, though he’s never happy about being forced to fight a close friend and it troubles him greatly after. After the battle with his mentor, Zack adds a second scar to his face crossing the one the conflict left him with, for reasons he prefers not to discuss as it’s something girlish and pathetic.
Another thing to note would be his mental state (at the point in time where I'm swiping him from for this RP) was in the process of deteriorating. While on the run from ShinRa troops set out to capture two fugitives, it is shown through his DMW system that his memories are becoming hazy and blending together, pieces missing and many voices running through his head. There wasn’t really enough time for an official diagnosis, obviously, but this could mean that over time, Zack’s mentality would be in as bad shape as his spiky-headed friend a few years down the road.
His memory isn’t the greatest to begin with, either. It’s often commented on by fellow SOLDIER teammates and his superiors that if they didn’t have to frequently remind him, Zack would easily forget a task he’s assigned to do, or how to perform a particular skill. Mostly it could be blamed on his lack of a decent attention span, but as such he has a habit of assigning people close to him nicknames just in case.
